Endangered Species Protection
Under the Act, NOAA oversees the protection, conservation and recovery of more than 160 endangered and threatened marine species. At NOAA, we rely on the best science available to implement the ESA. In celebration of this incredible 50th anniversary, we’re showcasing our science, conservation, and relationships with ESA implementers through the features and videos below.
The Endangered Species Act Needs Your Help!
Efforts in the Chesapeake Bay include identifying and protecting these fish habitats, reducing boat kills and educating students about these fish.
Unpredictable weather patterns, warmer ocean temperatures and rising sea levels caused by climate change have reduced habitat for the endangered small toothed fish.

Of all the species NOAA protects under the Endangered Species Act, nine species are believed to be at risk of extinction in the near future.

To implement these groundbreaking policies, we rely on the best available science. We work with international federal, tribal, state and local government agencies as well as non-governmental and citizen organizations. ;
Endangered Species Act remains a powerful and effective tool for protecting species and their habitats. Less than 1% of ESA-listed species are extinct. Others have recovered and no longer need ESA protection.
